BPTW were appointed by mhs homes to develop a residential scheme for St. Clements House as part of our continued work in the local area. The five to seven-storey building was designed to be highly accessible and comply with Lifetime Homes regulations. The design overcame site constraints, such as the proximity to a railway line and busy road, by carefully positioning the building’s mass and orientation so the apartments benefit from good views over Rochester Castle and Cathedral, accompanied by a new, tree-lined boulevard to buffer lower floors and the use of external amenity areas to provide ample space around the building.
The aesthetic strategy sought to create a design that responded to the emerging character of Corporation Street while also relating to the historic buildings of central Rochester. The provision of communal spaces and external amenity areas such as a terrace, activity lawn, sensory garden and nature corridor improve social interaction and quality of life for everyone living at St. Clements House.
