We are excited to announce that Constable Road and Rembrandt Drive, our completed scheme of seven age-friendly homes for Gravesham Borough Council, is shortlisted for this year’s Housing Design Awards!
Constable Road and Rembrandt Drive provide an innovative approach to rightsizing with a bespoke housing typology focused on improving residents’ health, wellbeing and long-term quality of life while making larger homes available to local families through downsizing.
Developed through a collaboration between Gravesham Borough Council and BPTW, the typology focuses on creating homes that meet residents’ needs and aspirations, including ample amenity and storage space, a wheelchair-accessible layout, and a flexible room in the roof suitable for hobbies, as an office or a place for guests and future carers to stay. The project contributes to a long-term strategy developed by Gravesham Borough Council to encourage rightsizing and address the pressures on the borough’s affordable housing stock. Constable Road and Rembrandt Drive are attractive housing options for older people, and the design’s typology can be used on sites across the borough.
The design was completed in 2022, and the residents moved in shortly after. BPTW Partner and project lead Neill Campbell was fortunate to meet Constable Road residents John and Jenny Diprose and speak about how their new home has transformed their lives.
// Everything being all on one floor has been most transformational. I can do everything myself. It’s just beautiful that I can do everything myself. // Mr Diprose, Constable Road resident.
We look forward to the winners’ announcement later this year.
