BPTW is collaborating with Medway Council and Design South East to facilitate and coordinate a co-creation process for Gillingham Town Centre, working closely with the local community and key stakeholders. This initiative lays the groundwork for the town centre’s future evolution, defining an overall vision and an action plan to realise the vision. Developed through a community-led approach, with the creation of a demographically-representative panel of community members, the project builds on Gillingham’s strengths while addressing challenges, opportunities and aspirations.
The Gillingham Community Panel, comprising 40 diverse members that were selected through a process expertly led by Design South East, is at the heart of the co-creation process. The vision for Gillingham is shaped by four key themes identified by the Community Panel; improving streets and spaces, enhancing buildings, focusing on town centre uses, and enhancing culture and community life.
A framework for co-creation was established through a series of community workshop events with the panel, adopting a community-driven approach to enhance Gillingham town centre and foster ongoing citizen engagement. Through guided tours, table discussions, and feedback sessions, key strengths and areas for improvement have been identified, empowering community members to contribute meaningfully to the town’s vision.
Once the final workshop concludes, the Gillingham Town Centre Action Plan will be launched in Spring 2025.
