We are thrilled to announce that our draft Chatham Centre Design Code is now live. Developed for Medway Council, the code sets out the detailed parameters needed to create high-quality, beautiful places in Chatham. It will provide more certainty in the planning system while empowering the community to determine how their neighbourhood looks and feels.
Working to the process detailed in the National Model Design Code, BPTW’s work was undertaken by our urban design team, overseen by Director Scott Elliott Adams, leading a wider consultant team including Create Streets, HTA Landscape, Urban Movement and Lyall Bills & Young Architects.
The Design Council and Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities recently recognised the Chatham Centre Design Code as one of the exemplar codes from the Government’s Design Code Pathfinder Programme in a recent publication and documentary video.
The draft code has been developed closely with council officers and members, and wider community members and stakeholders are now invited to participate in the consultation process and shape the future of Medway’s emerging centre, with the consultation running until 3rd January 2024. Final adoption as an SPD is expected in early 2024. You can view the draft design code here.
