We are pleased to share some recent photography of BPTW’s innovative design for the first custom-build phase of Ebbsfleet Garden City. Known as Alkerden Gateway, the project provides 67 contemporary homes with customisable elements for client Westerhill Homes. Now in the final stage of construction, homeowners have begun moving into their homes on the scheme which is due to be fully completed by the end of this year.
Variety in homeowner choice over external materials and architectural details has helped create a vibrant street scene within the neighbourhood. Residents have chosen between nine different external materials, including red or buff brick or the option for unique brick details. Internally, homebuyers selected one of three ground-floor layouts to offer them desirable homes that best meet their needs. With a sustainable impetus reflective of a 21st-century garden city, homeowners have also been able to select biodiversity enhancements to benefit local ecology, including fruit trees and flowering, species-rich and wildflower turf, green roofs, bird and bat boxes, and bee bricks. Additionally, electric vehicle charging is standard, and all homes can select PV panels and water recycling facilities.
The repetition of building shapes and a legible street pattern creates a harmonious neighbourhood, ensuring that the custom-build options add visual interest and desirability while maintaining a high-quality environment. The design quality was recognised by national awards, such as the Housing Design Awards, and by the project’s inclusion in the Building Garden Communities Conference at the RIBA.
Alkerden Gateway is part of BPTW’s ongoing work in the southeast, including designing up to 1,000 homes on four development sites at Ebbsfleet Garden City, one of Kent’s highest-profile projects.
