We are delighted to share photos of our completed Woolwich Reach scheme, a development for Notting Hill Genesis and contractor Higgins in Newham which has kickstarted much-needed regeneration in the area.
Transforming a site which had lain derelict for over 20 years, Woolwich Reach delivers 75 high quality, spacious homes and 100 sqm of commercial space. Reflected in the building form and orientation, BPTW’s design deals successfully with numerous site and environmental challenges including exposure to flooding from the Thames, prevailing wind, proximity to City Airport, and structural challenges with the site located within the easement zone of the new Elizabeth Line. The prominent riverside and parkside location were also key design drivers for the scheme. Our architectural team capitalised on this by designing homes to maximise spectacular views over the Thames and over the locally valued Royal Victoria Gardens which surrounds the scheme. A commercial unit and three townhouses activate the streetscape at ground level along a newly formed route to the park and a publicly accessible viewing platform maximises the prominent riverside location.
Woolwich Reach has also created a link between the Woolwich Ferry and King George V DLR station by acting as a marker building for pedestrian and ferry routes. Public access to the Capital Ring, a popular dedicated walking and cycling route around the capital, has been improved, promoting social sustainability across the area. As one of the first schemes to come forward, Woolwich Reach is setting a precedent for future development in the area which is part of Newham Council’s ‘Vision for the Royal Docks’ and ‘Arc of Opportunity’.
